Anti-smacking bill is debated in New Zealand...
February 27th 2007 02:44
An anti-smacking bill introduced by the Greens Party is causing a furore in New Zealand. Opponents of the bill claim that parents will lose their right to physically discipline their own children. The MP who introduced the bill claims she has never physically disciplined her five children.
The Greens MP has been insulted and physically threatened on radio talkback and on a controversial blogsite. Laws relating to assaults on adults by other adults are pretty tough in NZ, with self defence or defence of others incapable of defending themselves being the only grounds to successfully defend such charges in court.
The state of California is also debating a similar bill, except they have an age of three years and under.
I'll report again here as the debate heats up in coming weeks.
