Anti-smacking bill is passed without much fuss...

The anti-smacking bill was passed without much fuss, the politically historical compromise reached with the conservative National Party opposition ensured its success. It will be in the statutes within a month.
This is the end of the parliamentary process, but there will still be some political fallout in the future. A list member of a minor party resigned over the outcome. The fact he resigned was more newsworthy than his reasons. As a list member of the MMP New Zealand Parliament he is there only through the percentage of votes his party received and his place on the list. In New Zealand half the seats are elected in constituent seats and half through the list.
It has been a very eventful two years since Greens MP Sue Bradford introduced her Private Members Bill. It virtually split New Zealand society at times and the latest polls suggested 80% of New Zealanders were against the Bill. But it is now almost law!
