A Chinese Olympic gold-medalist chided by government...
Chinese short track speedskater gold medalist at the just completed Vancouver Winter Olympics, Zhou Yang, was chided by China's deputy sports minister for thanking her parents, but not her country after winning the gold medal last month.
The 18 year old who won gold in the 1500m and as part of the 3000m relay team, said she hoped the achievement would make life easier for her unemployed parents.
"Its okay to thank your parents, but firstly you should thank your motherland. You should put your motherland first, not to only thank your parents", deputy sports minister Yu Zaiquing reportedly said.
I have heard such things before in another time and place. In Berlin in 1936, or in Moscow in 1980, perhaps?
