Custom made bones ready in a matter of hours...
The world's first custom made bones that can be "grown" in a matter of hours and fit precisely into the existing break could become a reality in only three years. Science fiction?
These new bones which would replace damaged or ceramic versions used in reconstructive surgery, are made from calcium phosphate - the natural element existing in natural bones, and therefore would not be rejected by the body itself.
The University of Tokyo scientists who made the breakthrough and announced this incredible new advance in natural science, said the new technology would be ready for use on the skull within three years.
Their CT Bone system takes a series of pictures and X-rays to form a 3D image of the affected portion of the skull. Hundreds of layers of calcium phosphate are then laid down until they match the actual shape and size of bone that is required.
