Moving closer to our Aussie cousins...
Scientists said recently that the biggest earthquake to hit New Zealand in seventy eight years had brought New Zealand closer to Australia... by 30cm.
But fear not those on each side of the Tasman Sea, you will continue to be seperated by the other 2250 km stretch.
It is actually quite remarkable that the 7.8 magnitude quake which hit the Milford Sound area on the lower west coast of the South Island, caused only slight damage to buildings and property - and didn't cause any tsunamis to hit the Australian coast, unlike a similar earthquake which sent a deadly tsunami to Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga with devastating results.
Mother nature can be fickle and selective, it appears
