Less than three months after Kronic was banned, new synthetic cannabis products are back on the market.
Auckland-based Enjoi Products is manufacturing a repackaged and modified version of its Amsterdam Cafe synthetic cannabis product.
It was released to convenience stores across Auckland on the weekend.
The Long Island Tea blend has been slightly chemically altered from the company's former Havana Special product, which was affected by the government ban that came into force in August, the ,New Zealand Herald reports.
But Enjoi Products managing director Zaid Muso has assured people their latest product, which retails for $20, has "quite a similar effect" to the old one.
"There's nothing to really hide here, it is a synthetic cannabinoid," he said.
Muso said by altering its packaging and one of the chemicals used in the blend, the latest Amsterdam Cafe brand was now legal.
He said other companies were also set to release modified synthetic cannabis products.
In July, the government passed the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill. The bill is an interim ban on certain products the Misuse of Drugs Act is overhauled.
